Best of 2008: No.3 most-viewed Egg

STEPPING STONE THEATRE’S “RAINBOW CROW” (original episode October 24): SteppingStone Theatre, a youth company with a long history and new space in St. Paul, in October premiered Rainbow Crow, an original work created by former Playwrights’ Center fellow Rhiana Yazzie. The Albuquerque native came here by way of Los Angeles just two years ago, but Rainbow Crow is just the first of four commissioned works from Yazzie local companies are producing in the next year (look for her work soon on the stages of Teatro del Pueblo, Mixed Blood and Pangea World Theatre). 3-Minute Egg talked with Yazzie and SteppingStone’s artistic director, Richard Hitchler, during final run-throughs.

HEIRUSPECS (original date December 15): St. Paul hip-hoppers Heiruspecs drew an enthusiastic crowd full of smiles to First Avenue to celebrate its new, self-titled CD. Best of 2008: No.5 most-viewed Egg

MATTHEW SMITH “ADMITTANCE” (original episode December 1): Matthew Smith was in the midst of a thriving painting career when he made a sharp detour to musical composition. He’s now a multidisciplinary artist, threading film, visual art and experimental theater and movement. Admittance, performed at the Ritz Theater, was an ambitious and deeply personal work created in collaboration with local choreographers Cathy Wright and Deborah Jinza Thayer. 3-Minute Egg peeked into a dress rehearsal at Thayer’s studio and spoke with Smith about his artistic evolution.

This Week: The Top-5 of 2008

eggAll this week, beginning Monday, 3-Minute Egg counts down the top five most-viewed Eggs of the year (well, of the quarter … we launched September 15). We’re also experimenting this week with advertising embedded in each Egg by our video host, blip.tv. Please take a moment to let us know your reactions to the advertisements (Are they appropriate to the video content? Acceptable? Intrusive?, etc.) This will help us determine how/where to use advertising in 2009.

We’ll be back with fresh Eggs on Monday, January 5. And keep your eyes peeled for our first 3-Minute Egg DVD — all 67 episodes from 2008 wrapped into one high-def disc — on sale in mid-January!

See you in the New Year!

Winter Book

For 20 years, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts has brought light and warmth to Minnesota winters with the annual Winter Book — a piece of book art merging text with illustration, unique design and other visual elements. Bryan Thao Worra, a Laotian-American who just earned a literature fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, was tabbed as the author for the 2008 book, Winter Ink, which received a warm reception at a launch party inside Open Book. 3-Minute Egg was there.

Southwest High / Pangea World Theater

Theater students at Southwest High School work each year with mentors associated with Pangea World Theater to write and produce their own piece of theater. This year, through a program called Diverse Stages, Pangea placed the students’ show on their regular season calendar for the first time. 3-Minute Egg captured the show and talked with students and mentors about their process.
