Hijacking Mad King Thomas

Veteran dance duo Hijack asked emerging dance trio Mad King Thomas to choreograph pieces on each other for the Red Eye’s Isolated Acts series of new work. The results have become Maybe — on stage this weekend, and on screen here in this experimental Egg from 3-Minute Egg, which interviewed the groups separately and taped them together in a run-through rehearsal.

The 2007 McKnight Artist Fellows in Photography are showing off the fruits of their opportunities at Franklin Art Works. 3-Minute Egg met with three of the four artists — Peter Latner, Paula McCartney and Anthony Marchetti — at the opening reception. The fourth artist is Tom Wik, who didn’t want to be interviewed. The exhibition is on view through August 1.

Maria Isa’s Street Politics

Maria Isa grew up in a household on St. Paul’s West Side steeped in Puerto Rican culture, music and activism, yet Isa hasn’t lost sight of her Minnesota surroundings. Her music reflects that hybrid — a bilingual dose of soul, hip-hop and Latin rhythms supporting Isa’s uplifting lyrics and addictive delivery. 3-Minute Egg went to First Avenue for the release concert celebrating Isa’s second disc, Street Politics, and spoke with Isa days earlier, outside her office in Lowertown St. Paul.

New Works at the Red Eye

For 25 years, the Red Eye Theater has encouraged local creativity and exploration through its New Works festival. A handful of works-in-progress launched the latest rendition of the festival, as caught by the lens of 3-Minute Egg. New Works continues the next three weekends with work by Dominic Orlando, collaborative dance by Hijack and Mad King Thomas and more dance from Nicolas Lincoln. Look for an Egg next week probing the Hijack/MKT hybrid.

The Screen / The Thing

Justin Jones moved from New York to the Twin Cities only five years ago — he came here with Tere O’Connor on his dance resume — but he’s already carved a home for himself in the local avant garde movement scene (he was a 2007 McKnight Fellow, and City Pages named him Artist of the Year in 2008). 3-Minute Egg takes you to a rehearsal for Jones’ upcoming weekend at the Southern Theater, where he merges his curiosity in movement and his fascination with quantum physics.

The final part of our series will come from opening night of My Father’s Bookshelf, centered around the story of a man with Alzheimer’s Disease, June 19 in the Guthrie’s Dowling Studio.
