While teaching her final class of the 2008 spring semester at St. Cloud State University, April Sellers slipped on the dance floor and fell over a bench, separating her left shoulder. The injury was so severe that she had to have her shoulder immobilized for months. She couldn’t dance or teach, and a specialist told her to look for another profession. She turned her adversity into new work that, she says, has broken new ground for her artistry and revitalized her commitment to dance. 3-Minute Egg caught up with Sellers at Rogue Buddha Gallery, in Northeast Minneapolis, where the April Sellers Dance Collective performs Transcendental Biology nightly through March 27.

Good piece Matt, however, there was not one mention by you, in the tags in the brief summary or anywhere of the collaboration between April and the other driving force behind this week long performance, Marc DeBauch, Satyarthi and Mark Bautch. Transcendental Biology is NOT only about dance, it is also about Marc’s work, how HE has been transcendending space, time, biology, human form into other spaces, places and realities. While I love April Sellers, her work and her ahead of the curve work, for you to miss mentioning Marc’s incredible body of work is really unfortunate.
While I do agree that Marc Bautch’s paintings are an important part of this collaboration i do understand the focus on April for this 3 minute egg. Mr. Peiken succinctly weaved an interview, his own commentary and stunning video work into a concise review. It was clear his interest was in discussing April’s injury and her work as a choreographer. There would have to be another 3 minutes to do justice to Mark’s work. Thanks Matt for the independent journalism!
